Sit and wait predation

A sit and wait predator, Bothrops atrox. Known as the fer-de-lance or the terciopelo, this is one of the world's most venemous snakes.

Common in rainforests of Central and South America, it is virtually invisible when nestled in leaf litter.

This snake is positioned on ground where the litter has been swept away, which presents a more solid-colored background than its normal locations. The broken pattern, which is key to its crypsis in leaf litter, stands out against the solid color.
